Facebook Reach Went Up Last Year. Your Business Page Never Saw It.

Posted on September 9, 2026October 24, 2026 By MC Franklin Jr. No Comments on Facebook Reach Went Up Last Year. Your Business Page Never Saw It.

Facebook organic reach went up last year. Not a little — a lot. And if you run a small business Page, you almost certainly did not feel it.

That gap is the whole story. The reach exists. It is being handed to a different container than the one most local businesses have been feeding since 2012.

Reach didn’t die. It moved.

Metricool’s 2026 Social Media Study analyzed 39,762,999 posts across 1,059,949 accounts and found Facebook reach up 51% year over year, impressions up 57%, and interactions up 56% — one of the strongest rebounds of any platform in the study (published January 12, 2026).

Read that next to what a Page actually earns. Socialinsider’s Facebook benchmark report, built from 25 million posts across 130,683 business pages between January 2024 and December 2025, puts the average engagement rate at 0.15% (published March 23, 2026, updated July 15, 2026).

Both are true at once. The platform is distributing more. Your Page is not the thing being distributed.

Stat card: Facebook reach up 51% year over year, average business Page engagement 0.15%, link post engagement 0.05%, and average Meta ad price up 12% in Q2 2026
Sources: Metricool 2026 Social Media Study; Socialinsider Facebook benchmarks; Meta Q2 2026 results.

Be careful which number you are being sold

Here is a distinction that gets blurred constantly, usually by someone selling a course. That 0.15% is an engagement rate, not a reach rate. It measures reactions, comments, and shares against followers — not the share of your audience that saw the post.

That matters, because the honest answer about Facebook Page reach percentages in 2026 is that no current, credible, published figure exists. Meta does not release one. The confident “Pages only reach 2% of followers” line you have seen quoted for a decade traces to vendor estimates, not to Meta. If a number arrives without a study, a sample size, and a date, treat it as decoration.

The one Socialinsider figure worth tattooing on your posting calendar is narrower and better sourced: link posts average 0.05% engagement, the worst-performing format they measured. Roughly a third of what a plain status post earns.

Most small business Pages post almost nothing but links.

What everyone gets wrong about Groups

The usual pitch is that Groups carry a secret reach multiplier. Nobody can prove that. Meta publishes no Group reach benchmark either, and Group insights are not comparable across groups. Anyone quoting you a Group reach percentage made it up.

The real advantage is structural, and more durable than an algorithm quirk.

A Group is a destination. A Page is a broadcast.

People open a Group on purpose. They joined it, they check it, they ask questions in it. A Page post must win a feed slot against everything else on earth. A Group post lands in front of people who opted into that exact subject and are already in a mood to reply.

The audience is the distribution

Meta says almost 1.8 billion people use Facebook Groups every month, across 25 million monthly active public groups (Meta Newsroom, October 4, 2024). Those are Meta’s own figures, and the number that matters for a local business is not the 1.8 billion. It is that your town almost certainly has between five and fifty active groups where people ask, out loud, for exactly what you sell.

Recommendation beats advertising in local

Pew Research Center found 73% of Americans often or sometimes get local news from friends, family and neighbors — and among them, 25% get it via social media, up from 17% in 2018 (5,146 U.S. adults, fielded January 22–28, 2024, published September 26, 2024). A neighbor tagging you in a group thread is that mechanic firing. A boosted Page post is not.

Meta has been signaling this for two years

This is not a hunch. Meta has been building toward it in public.

In October 2024, Meta introduced a Local tab that “pulls together the best local content from across Facebook — from places like Marketplace, Groups and Events — into a single tab”. Note what is on that list, and what is not. Pages are not on it.

On Meta’s Q4 2024 earnings call, Zuckerberg said the plan was to “get back to how Facebook was originally used back in the day” (TechCrunch, January 30, 2025).

Then in November 2025, Meta gave private group admins the option to convert a group from private to public, with a three-day review window and with all previously private posts staying visible only to people who were members before the switch (Meta Newsroom, November 3, 2025).

That last one is the tell. Meta built a migration path that moves closed communities into public, recommendable territory without punishing members who joined when it was private. Platforms do not build that unless they want more public community content to rank.

What this does to your budget

Now the money. Meta reported that in Q2 2026, ad impressions across its Family of Apps rose 14% year over year while average price per ad rose 12% (Meta investor release, July 29, 2026).

Prices are climbing nearly as fast as inventory. For a national advertiser optimizing a funnel, that is a rounding error. For a plumber in Henderson with $600 a month, the same budget buys measurably less every quarter, forever.

The read is not “stop advertising.” It is that paid Facebook is now the expensive half of your presence, and the free half you ignored got better while you were not looking.

Five moves worth making this month

  1. Find your rooms. Search Facebook for your city plus “recommendations,” “neighbors,” “buy nothing,” and your trade. Rank them by posts per day, not member count. A 1,200-member group with 30 daily posts beats a 40,000-member ghost town.
  2. Join as a human, not a logo. Use your personal profile. Read the rules. Most local groups ban business posts outright and permit answers to direct questions — which is the better slot anyway.
  3. Answer thirty questions before you promote once. Give a real answer with no pitch attached, including when the answer sends the person elsewhere. That is the entire trust mechanism, and it is slow on purpose.
  4. Stop posting bare links on your Page. At 0.05% average engagement they are the weakest format Socialinsider measured. Write the substance into the post itself.
  5. Start the group nobody has started. If your town lacks an active group for your niche, owning that room beats years of Page posting — and unlike a Page, it is a destination people check on purpose.

The way this goes wrong

Groups punish extraction faster than any other surface on Facebook. Drop three promo posts in a local recommendations group and you will be removed by a volunteer admin who owes you nothing, and that door does not reopen.

You are a member who happens to own a business, not a business that joined a group. If that distinction feels like a technicality, you will get banned.

The other failure is measurement. Group activity will not show up cleanly in analytics. Leads arrive as calls from people who say a neighbor mentioned you. Ask every caller how they found you and write it down, or you will conclude this is not working while it is working.

Frequently asked questions

Should I delete my Facebook Page?

No. The Page is infrastructure — reviews, hours, Messenger, and your ad account all hang off it. Treat it as the profile people check after they hear about you, not as a channel that finds new people.

Can my business Page post in Groups?

Some groups permit it and most local ones do not. Check each group’s rules before posting, and expect that a personal profile will be received better than a logo in nearly every community group.

How long before this produces leads?

Longer than ads, shorter than SEO. You are building recognition inside a fixed set of people, so it compounds — the tenth helpful answer outperforms the first because the same members have now seen you ten times.

Is a Facebook Group better than a Page for every business?

No. It favors businesses whose customers are geographically clustered and who buy on recommendation — trades, clinics, restaurants, real estate, pets, home services. If your buyers are national and transactional, your budget is better spent elsewhere.

The short version

Facebook is distributing more content than it was a year ago and charging more for the paid kind. The organic half of that shift is flowing to places where people opted in and talk to each other, and your Page was never that place.

Ignore anyone who quotes you a reach percentage without a study attached. Go find the three rooms in your town where your customers already ask for what you sell, and be useful in them for a month before you sell anything.

Should local businesses trade Page posts for Facebook Groups?

MCNM’s take: We manage social media for businesses, nonprofits, and ministries, but we think Group work belongs to someone inside the business, because members want a real neighbor, not an agency. That makes this a time decision more than a money decision. It is also easy to undercount: our own data once showed zero tracked leads, and Group leads are even harder to see.

Pros

  • It costs time, not ad money. With Meta ad prices rising, free reach in Groups stretches a small budget.
  • Members opted into the topic, so a helpful answer reaches people who are already asking for what you sell.
  • Trust builds over time. The same members see your answers again and again, which a one-off boosted post cannot match.

Cons

  • It is slow by design. You help for a month or more before you sell, which hurts if you need calls now.
  • A few pushy posts can get you removed by a volunteer admin, and you rarely get a second chance.
  • Results hide from your reports. Group leads arrive as phone calls, not clicks, so weak tracking makes a working channel look dead.

Our recommendation: Make the shift if the owner, or a trusted staff member, can show up in local groups a few minutes a day as a real person. If no one can, keep the Page up to date and put your effort into search instead. This week, add a “How did you hear about us?” question to your phone script and web form.

' “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. '
